Thinning the comb of a rifle stock can greatly improve its appearance. In this video, Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, thins the comb of the stock on a Winchester model 67. He starts by marking the area of the stock to be thinned. The point of the comb is then filed down to the guide lines until the desired angle is reached, checking the progress regularly with a gauge fabricated to the appropriate angle. Once the point of the comb is of the desired angle and thickness, it is blended back into the buttstock by filing a series of flats. To finish up the job those flats are blended to round off the top of the comb.
